SHAMAKHI

Shamakhi was first menfioned as Kamachia by ancient Greco-Roman geographer Claudius Ptolemaeus in the 1st to 2nd century CE. Shamakhi was an important town during the Middle Ages and served as capital of the Shirvanshah state from the 8th to 15th centuries and capital of the independent Shirvan Khanate. The main landmark of the city is Gulistan fortress (11 th – 12 th centuries) – the last refuge of Shirvan Dynasty built for the city’s defen- se. Equally interesfing are the mausoleum of Addy-Gyumbez (“The Seven Domes”) with nu- merous burial places of Shamakhi governors, Djuma cathedral mosque (10th century, recon- structed in the 19 th century), numerous ruins of the 10 th – 17 th centuries. Shamakhi is also famous for having one of the biggest astronomical observatories in the region.
